The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
