I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on overturned decision.

Australia gloveman Alex Carey revealed he believed he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on review on day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test against England.

Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to aid the hosts reach 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.

What happened?

The home side were 245-6 when Carey looked to play a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.

England were convinced they had a wicket, believing they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

After captain Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the footage examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a significant spike although this registered prior to the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a space between bat and ball.

Consequently, Carey was allowed to continue.

"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.

"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Discussion has swirled about 'Snicko'' during the Ashes contest after a series of unclear moments.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated England may take this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's where we are."

A Special Hundred

The ton was his first in Ashes cricket.

It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose dad died in recent months. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by pointing to the heavens.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. It's hard not to get emotional. It was a fantastic feeling."

Not New to Furore

Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a febrile final day.

On his reprieve he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"Perhaps luck was on my side."
