Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
