A high-ranking Russian army officer has been fatally wounded following an blast in Moscow, according to official statements.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

The committee mentioned that one line of inquiry involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Location of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.

Accounts state the explosion happened in a car park near a residential building.

History of Incidents

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.

This most recent event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.

While a Ukrainian source in the past linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

The conflict has been marked by shadowy operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
