Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
