Seconds before his name was called, a anxious idea darted through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver again."

"This has been a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was recognized in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can use that."

This time around, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to enjoy a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned team of the year.

A Whirlwind Schedule

But rather than attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to the sunshine state.

"It's been a hectic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy stated he has no plans to slow down, despite securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a more to give in me," he remarked.

"Further big titles, order of merit titles, international events, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the key."

Collective Honor

At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the team award, also praised golf's stellar night and his close friend's personal achievement.

"These become the memories that will live with us for all time so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," he commented. "Seeing Rory win, I think he deserves it so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Looking Ahead

His goal is to at last capture his first major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," the 34-year-old said.

Before McIlroy left, one final question arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"Provided that they quit letting in four goals at home," he answered with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a touch of positivity around."

On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that he is focusing on the bright side.
