On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold beginning to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
