This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
