Walmart Introduces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, because the restriction is based on individual trips, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.
Hopefully, the retail limits will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts alike.
