Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
